The intelligent apartment: five ways to make every metre work harder

September 9, 2026 · By Numbi Gichuki

The best small-space solutions disappear into the architecture while giving you more storage, calm and flexibility.

Small rooms do not need small ambitions. They need fewer competing decisions. Start by identifying what should be visible and what should have a home behind a closed door. Full-height cabinetry, when proportioned carefully, can turn an awkward wall into a quiet architectural feature.

Use repetition to create visual calm: consistent handles, a restrained material palette and lighting that is planned with the furniture. A built-in bench can become seating, storage and a landing place for daily rituals all at once.

Finally, leave some breathing room. The goal is not to fill every corner; it is to make the space feel generous when it is in use.
